Welcome to The Money Brew

Hello, and welcome to The Money Brew. I’ve had the idea of starting a blog for a long time. I originally bought themoneybrew.com domain a number of years ago. Like basically everyone, I wanted to start a blog to increase my cash flow. I was inspired by grade A blogs such as mrmoneymustache.com and 1500days.com.

These blogs are both interesting to read and provide useful knowledge. Of course, the natural next step after someone decides they want to start a blog is to google how to do it. More specifically, how to make money doing it. Not surprisingly, after 30 min of looking around, the consensus was blogs about money, and I believe specifically personal finance, were top earners.

However, the consensus was also that you need to be consistent and provide a lot of good, quality content. While I do have a background in finance, and it is my current employment, I didn’t think that was going to be enough. I needed to make it more interesting. Primarily because it was not lost on me that to create a robust blog would take a fair amount of time and sacrifice, and if I was going to do that, I would need something to carry myself along, especially initially when I had no audience. It needed to be something that I would find beneficial to myself, even if ultimately no one read my blog.

Additionally, there are a ton of personal finance blogs out there. I needed something unique. There are, at least in my experience, two types of personal finance blogs. The personal, and the impersonal. Thinking about the blogs I enjoyed and went back to again and again, I realized they were the blogs that presented ideas, but in the form of the authors’ lived experiences i.e. Mr. Money Mustache and 1500 Days.

However, I wasn’t on board with creating yet another FIRE blog, for two reasons. For one, I don’t subscribe to their way of thinking. I’m more of the Rich Dad, Poor Date mindset. More of the growth, not scarcity mindset. And for two, I have no intention of putting the details of my personal finances on display for the world to see.

So where did that leave me. I needed something interesting for myself, plausibly interesting to other people, that I could add a “personal finance” spin to, and that was personal enough, but not too personal. And that’s how I eventually ended up here. I love coffee and I love beer. And the moneybrew.com domain was available. I fully realize that I’m somewhat forcing the connection, but I think it works.

One of the definitions of “brew” is “to bring about”. So logically, the name The Money Brew can mean, to bring about money. I.e. to make money. Financial component: check. As for the coffee and beer part, I guess we’ll see if there’s any interest here. To start filling the pages of this blog, I’m going to kick off a series on brewing beer. It won’t be framed as a guide to it, rather my experience. Check it out here.

If you’ve made it all the way to this part, thank you for reading this far. Feel free to send me any comments, questions, concerns, bitches, moans, gripes, etc. to matt@themoneybrew.com or leave a comment.
